How Often Should You Do Red Light Therapy?
One of the first questions people ask when exploring Red Light Therapy is, “How frequently do I have to do it?”
Red Light Therapy is a non-invasive and safe treatment that, when done correctly with the right products, has no negative side effects. So, unlike something like a tanning bed, you can’t sit in front of a red light panel for too long and end up with a burn.
Which means, you can use nearly any Red Light Therapy protocol you want (unless you have conditions or are on medications that make you photosensitive).
In most of the protocols we researched, most land in the two to three times a week for 10-15 minutes.
The differences between protocols comes down to the results you’re trying to achieve or the condition you’re treating. The most significant difference is if you’re trying to address skin issues or deeper tissues.
We’ll share some more information about superficial (skin-level) treatment protocols and deeper tissue protocols below.
First, we want to stress the most important thing about any protocol you follow: Consistency.
The #1 factor that determines if you see results or not is consistency. If you’re not consistent, you’ll likely not see the results you want. So, pick a protocol you can stick with and ramp it up.
How Long Should You Do Red Light Therapy?
For general use, position your light 6-36″ inches away from your body.
What’s the difference? Well, more light penetrates deeper into your tissues the closer it is to your body. This means position the light closer to your body for deeper-tissue penetration.
Positioning the light farther from your body is better for treating larger skin areas. This means it's best to position the light farther from your body if you’re treating surface-level skin issues.
The protocols below assume you’re doing 2-3 sessions per week.
How long to do Red Light Therapy for skin issues:
30 seconds-2.5 minutes per area (if the light is 6″ inches away)
1-3.5 minutes per area (if the light is 12″ away)
5 minutes per area (if the light is 18″ away)
2-7 minutes per area (if the light is 24″ away).
3-14 minutes per area (if the light is 36″ away)
How long to do Red Light Therapy for deeper-tissue treatment:
2-7 minutes per area (if the light is 6″ inches away)
5-10 minutes per area (if the light is 12″ away)
Red Light Therapy at Home vs. at Clinics
Up until recently, you would only be able to do treatments through Red Light Therapy clinics.
And these sessions add up quick!
With some treatments costing $100 per session, even the two to three times a week would run you about $1,200 a month.
And that’s not accounting for results sometimes taking up to twelve weeks. If you did all your sessions at a clinic, you’d be paying about $3,600 out of pocket just to start to see results.
Considering the long list of benefits from Red Light Therapy, this makes having a product in your own home the obvious choice.
Red Light Therapy devices come in a range of sizes and price points. That’s why we put together this post all about the Best At-Home Red Light Therapy Devices.
